The Santa Cruz Hub for Sustainable Living is a constellation of community-based projects that has been building and celebrating community and offering crucial resources since 1994. We are currently closed for community safety, and rather than have each individual project at the Hub shoulder the burden for rent alone, we are focused on a collective effort to raise rent/expenses all together, and we're asking you to help us with that! Our greatest weapon against layoffs, pay reductions, and cuts to social welfare during and after COVID is the withholding of our labor. Workers across the world at universities, Amazon, Whole Foods, Target, Instacart, Walmart, and FedEx, to name a few, are going on strike this May 1. In addition, millions of tenants are withholding their rent.
Do not go to work as usual May 1, whether in person or online. Do not pay your rent. Reclaim the time and resources you need to care for yourself and your community.
Join us for a May Day Caravan as we stand with those striking and fighting for their right to live in this city. From the Oakes College parking lot, we will embark on a slow-moving, socially-distant action using car and bike transit from campus to downtown to support workers across the city (full route details TBA).
Those without a vehicle are welcome to join at one or more locations! If you are not currently in Santa Cruz, you can still be part of our journey by following along on here or on Twitter @payusmoreucsc.

-Recommendation from YARR (Your Allied Rapid Response): We assume some of you are in the position of being able to make a donation for those who have not been eligible for any money through the federal relief package. This includes not only those who are undocumented, but also US citizens who are married to specific groups of immigrants, like those on student visas. DACA college students may also be blocked from receiving aid. Given the cost of living in Santa Cruz county, federal relief will also fall short for other vulnerable groups. We have been researching which organizations in the county are able to get money out into the community quickly with minimal barriers/hurdles for those who are in need. At this time, if you are able, we are recommending you make a donation to the Community Action Board, through the CAB COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund. 100% of your donations will go to support groups such as those who are undocumented, unhoused, and/or have aged out of foster care. The fund will help individuals and families with a one-time emergency assistance in this time of crisis. https://www.undocufundmb.org "Undocumented workers are over-represented in the services, hospitality, and agriculture industries; industries severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This has led to the loss of their homes, wages, and/or employment. At the same time, undocumented workers have been excluded from federally and state funded safety net programs. This comes at a time when immigrant communities were already threatened by anti-immigration policies like public charge."

SubRosa is part of the Hub Community Center, in downtown Santa Cruz, CA which is the unceded territory of the Awaswas-speaking Uypi Tribe. The Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, comprised of the descendants of indigenous people taken to missions Santa Cruz and San Juan Bautista during Spanish colonization of the Central Coast, is today working hard to restore traditional stewardship practices on these lands and heal from historical trauma.
