An active next many days at SubRosa and around!

At SubRosa! And beyond!

SubRosa is a collectively run anarchist community space -

let's create together the world(s) we want to live in now.

  • Today! Art sale for Palestine collaboration with Lockette Magazine and Little Giant Collective and Kappa Zeta - this Friday May 3rd

2:30-4:30pm at SubRosa- Screen printed clothing and items for sale in the courtyard. 100% of proceeds going to Palestine's Children's Relief Fund. // Info from IG post - https://www.instagram.com/p/C6aC376JVQ8/

  • The Onko Rinkus Bicycle presents: Critical Mass (a bicycle party in Santa Cruz) this Friday May 3rd - meet at 6pm at the downtown clock tower.  And come to the after party at the Bike Church and support their free lock program and move yourself to some great music!

More info from @onko_rinkus - "Thought that I swore off promoting circus-themed bicycle parades for good. Yet here we are, once again, at the precipice of another celebration of humanity. Ready to dive headfirst into an, albeit temporary, shift in the paradigm of transportation infrastructure, protesting the status quo, moonlighting as an ephemeral street party on two wheels."

And after party at the Bike Church (SubRosa's wonderful neighbors at the Hub Community Center) with live music! Food! Art! And again, more info from @onko_rinkus - "Incidentally (although not coincidentally) Curve Sharpens will be making its first last stand at the Bike Church fundraiser after party, before Liam gallops off into the infinite unknown." Also with Les Bois Rouge and more at @thebikechurch - 703 Pacific Ave in downtown Santa Cruz (enter on Spruce St).

"Come one, come all. Wear a costume! Celebrate bikes! Dance! Tell your friends, warn your neighbors." Info from SubRosa IG post - https://www.instagram.com/p/C6fi3bvu18l/

  • Saturday May 4th at noon with poet and author Marsha de la O - You are invited to a poetry reading inside SubRosa (because of rain not in the courtyard) - event is free!

About the book of poems: Written during the last five years of the poet's father's life, "Creature" is a book about love, destruction, and the self, all standing in relation to family and the natural world. The poems themselves try to move toward what can't be said by finding connection with other life forms: hawks, hummingbirds, pelicans, lizards, horses, ravens, squid. By moving past linguistic walls into otherness, words become proximate to mystery and inhabit territory where expanses open and embodiment is always on the verge of transformation.

Marsha de la O is a lecturer in the English Department at California State University, Channel Islands, where she teaches poetry and creative writing. She is the author of several books. She lives with her husband in Ventura, California, where they founded the Ventura County Poetry Project to support local poetry. "Why is There Something Instead of Nothing?

Opening reception:  Friday, May 3rd, 5-9pm

Indexical, 1050 River St #119

Ann Altstatt is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores temporality, the intersections of scientific inquiry and mysticism, and the hidden stories of the material world. Their other research interests include paleontology, cosmology, discard studies, human relationships with the non-human, and multi-species survival in the face of global climate chaos. Ann graduated from the Digital Arts and New Media MFA at University of California, Santa Cruz in 2018. As a founding collective member at The Fábrica textile workshop since 2010, their arts practice

remains informed by community engagement, collaborative processes, and material reuse. They are honored to have been recognized by the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County as a 2020/2021 Rydell Visual Arts Fellow. Ann lives on the historic floodplain of the San Lorenzo River, with their partner and kiddo, a cat, two dogs, five chickens and innumerable termites.

  • Saturday May 4th Beltane Celebration - From http://www.templeofthewaters.org/actions-events/2024beltane   "We were very much looking forward to hosting another Beltane Celebration and Maypole Dance like we did last year, but it looks pretty likely that the meadow will be rained out on our celebration day.  Welcome rain!  Welcome water!  We celebrate you even when you slightly inconvenience us!"

"So!  We're moving things indoors and later.  To whit: you are cordially invited to a potluck at the Temple of the Waters, which will be followed by some time at the Temple altar to share your intentions for the upcoming turn of the Wheel of the Year.  We will then make an invisible, energetic Maypole and dance at least once circuit around it weaving invisible threads together —- they may take our sunshine, but they'll never take our ludicrous dances from us!  It'll be silly and ridiculous and that feels like one essential ingredient to marking this season.  We may even have a tiny, tea-candle sized fire to jump over if people are looking forward to that as a Beltane moment. Afterwards we'll have group singing time — bring a song you'd like to sing, or bring a voice you're willing to add to our impromptu chorus."

From linktree ( https://linktr.ee/ucscsjp ) in bio entitled "Our Encampment" & post slide entitled "Our Purpose" @ucscsjp - "As we enter over 200 days of genocide where over 40,000 lives in Gaza have been lost and millions have been displaced by the zionist occupation funded by our U.S. tax dollars and our UC tuition, we see the crucial need for students to escalate in our tactics to end the genocide against Gaza and the occupation of Palestine as a whole."

"The purpose of our encampment is to recenter and refocus our attention to the genocide in Gaza and the ongoing occupation of Palestine as a whole. We are centering the call for total liberation and freedom of the Palestinian people."

"We have a responsibility as people living in the U.S. and as UC students whose tuition is invested into the creation of the very missiles and weapons that are killing Palestinians at this very moment. Nothing should normal during a genocide and we refuse to continue carrying on as if it is. Our demands have been ignored. We will continue to escalate until they are met."And more at linktree in bio and at @ucscsjp

About our wonderful neighbor, The Bike Church (enter on Spruce St) - "The Bike Church is a project of the Hub and has been Santa Cruz's only community bike shop since 1998. Our shop functions in a DIY/DIT (Do-It-Together) manner: we provide the tools, space and instruction for individuals to fix their own bike with the guidance of knowledgeable mechanics. We ask for a donation of $5-15 per hour to use the shop--no one is turned away for lack of funds. We provide used and new parts for affordable prices, and have many used bikes for sale. We give away kids bikes for free. Our shop is run by a collective of mechanics and apprentices who are all paid equally. We use consensus meetings to make decisions about the running of the shop." SubRosa is part of the Hub Community Center, in downtown Santa Cruz, CA which is the unceded homelands of the Awaswas-speaking Ohlone people known as the Uypi, who stewarded these lands since time immemorial. Centuries of colonial violence led to the removal and displacement of the Uypi. The Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, comprised of the descendants of indigenous people taken to missions Santa Cruz and San Juan Bautista during Spanish colonization of the Central Coast, is today working hard to restore traditional stewardship practices on these lands and heal from historical trauma.

Do you want to join SubRosa in solidarity with the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band?

Comments on the SubRosa website are fully moderated. As a collective, we agreed that the purpose of the website was to promote SubRosa, not to provide an online place for lively and invigorating debate. We hope that the space itself is where conversations on the nature of anarchism and local projects will take place. That said, we occasionally approve comments that are informative or reflect a viewpoint we feel it is important for website visitors to read.
