WAIT, WHAT HAPPENED TO SAMUEL? On the evening of Dec 24th, 2024, our beloved Samuel Miller was in a devastating single car accident on Highway 17 while driving his friend back to Santa Cruz from the San Jose Airport. The truck was totaled, and Samuel suffered a cracked skull, subdural hematoma, and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). He received 2 staples in his head and was held in the hospital overnight before being released into the care of his housemates. Now, he's at home, healing and resting, surrounded by a community that loves him. His housemates and friends are helping with everything from meds to food, self-care, and monitoring symptoms for complications.

WHO IS SAMUEL? Samuel is a fiery shining star, an integral part of our Santa Cruz community. He works 2 jobs: one as the market manager for Blue Heron Farms and the other in an administrative role for the local nonprofit, the Santa Cruz Hub for Sustainable Living, which supports projects like the Bike Church, the Fabrica, and SubRosa (of which Samuel is a long time collective member). Samuel is also a passionate musician, playing music with many friends and involved in various musical projects such as playing for square dances, his sad country solo project, the Decompozers (science folk punk for the kids!), and Synth Raven. When he's not working or making music, you can find him playing Risk on his phone or tabletop games with his friends, or dog-sitting for his pals.

Samuel's journey to recovery will be long and challenging, but with your support, we can ease some of the financial burdens and help him focus on healing. • Devin forest-Hines is a beloved friend, musician, farmer, and ecologist. On Christmas Eve (12/24/24) Devin was in a car accident with Samuel and sustained painful injuries and the extent of the bodily and emotional damage are unknown. Devin is embarking on a pain management phase and his mobility is improving daily little by little. He is feeling grateful, clever jokes are slipping out, and he is excited to be close to a more recovered state.

Description: The Fábrica is a community workspace where folks can come to learn and share knowledge about textiles arts. This includes Sewing, Knitting, Quilting, Embroidery, Crochet, and Bookbinding, among other arts. The workshop is operated by volunteers and funded by donations from participants. We have sewing machines as well as generous amounts of fabric, zippers, notions, and the other tools and supplies one needs for most sewing and yarn-based projects. There is no charge to use the shop, but please consider a $5-10 donation to help with our operating costs. Contact info below.

About our wonderful neighbor, The Bike Church (enter on Spruce St) - "The Bike Church is a project of the Hub and has been Santa Cruz's only community bike shop since 1998. Our shop functions in a DIY/DIT (Do-It-Together) manner: we provide the tools, space and instruction for individuals to fix their own bike with the guidance of knowledgeable mechanics. We ask for a donation of $5-15 per hour to use the shop--no one is turned away for lack of funds. We provide used and new parts for affordable prices, and have many used bikes for sale. We give away kids bikes for free. Our shop is run by a collective of mechanics and apprentices who are all paid equally. We use consensus meetings to make decisions about the running of the shop." SubRosa is part of the Hub Community Center, in downtown Santa Cruz, CA which is the unceded homelands of the Awaswas-speaking Ohlone people known as the Uypi, who stewarded these lands since time immemorial. Centuries of colonial violence led to the removal and displacement of the Uypi. The Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, comprised of the descendants of indigenous people taken to missions Santa Cruz and San Juan Bautista during Spanish colonization of the Central Coast, is today working hard to restore traditional stewardship practices on these lands and heal from historical trauma.
