Coming up on the next two 1st Fridays, the Hub is bringing back our ever popular Night Markets! Our first one back will be on Friday November 6th from 6pm – 10pm. 

A popup bazaar of art and things featuring hand-made gifts and sundries, supporting local artists and community organizations. Prints, jewelry, vintage, baked goods, and more! The Night Market at the Hub – Friday 11/6 from 6 – 10pm in the courtyard at 703 Pacific Avenue.

Join us for a First Friday open house at The Fábrica! Friday 11/6 from 6-9pm. This month will feature photography and printinmaking works by Amahli Vivian.

“Knitting creates a 3-dimensional pattern through individual stitches interlinked together; photographic screen-printing relies on halftones organized in a grid-like pattern to (re)create an image. Images of my knitwork are reconstructed on paper to reveal the details in both knitwork and silkscreen. Yarn colors and interconnected knit stitches become physically magnified in my screen-prints, revealing the similar repetitive nature and intentionality of the two mediums. I view these art forms as intertwined and a way to examine my relationship with knitting/screen-printing.”

Amahli Vivian is an artist currently based in Sacramento, CA. Vivian incorporates several art forms in their practice, specifically knitting, printmaking, and analog photography. Their work is situated in the creation of patterns, DIY subcultures, archival documentation, and ways of viewing. Vivian received their B.A. in History of Art and Visual Culture (Curation, Heritage, Museums concentration) from UC Santa Cruz in 2026. Their research and academic interests have been recognized by the 2026 Dean’s and Chancellor’s Award for Undergraduate Research.

We have sewing machines as well as generous amounts of fabric, zippers, notions, and the other tools and supplies one needs for most sewing and yarn-based projects. Centuries of colonial violence led to the removal and displacement of the Uypi. The Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, comprised of the descendants of indigenous people taken to missions Santa Cruz and San Juan Bautista during Spanish colonization of the Central Coast, is today working hard to restore traditional stewardship practices on these lands and heal from historical trauma.

Summer/Autumn session of Free Skool Santa Cruz is done! Happy equinox! See you in the spring! A radically different approach to living and learning, Free Skool Santa Cruz is a grassroots educational project beyond institutional control. This Friday, September 25th, at sunset- all are invited to the fourth screening of the 2026 Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In season! 

We are doing something a little different this month. Besides a new location, the shorts are actually part of the feature. Read on for more details.

This month we want to highlight the animations of Frédéric Back, a French-Canadian artist and film director of short animated films. Instead of shorts, beginning at sunset, we will screen the following Back short films:

- Crac! (1981) 15min - The long life of a hand carved rocking chair
- Tout~Rien (All~Nothing) (1978) 11min - The long & restless life of human desire & consumption.

After intermission, we are excited to present Wolfwalkers (2020) - In an Irish forest at the edge of an English-occupied town, two girls become unlikely friends — one a wolf hunter's daughter, the other a wild spirit who can transform into a wolf beneath the moon. Together they must protect the ancient woods from those who would tame it, and discover a magic that links their fates forever.

NEW LOCATION: This screening will be at the corner of Locust & Cedar St, in downtown Santa Cruz (a block from Pacific Ave). We will reclaim a parking lot, and project onto a large wall, on the backside of the downtown multi-plex.

BRING blankets, pillows, anything you need to be comfortable in the great outdoors with early cool weather and fog, friends, snacks to share. Donations to support the project are more than welcome - and notaflof* so not expected!. (*no one turned away for lack of funds).
